[RN Discussion Board] Government 'complacent' over EMP risk -
-22 February 2012- -- - - - The government is 'complacent' about the risk to the UK of an electromagnetic pulse attack which could cripple critical infrastructure and make major cities 'unliveable' in days, the Defence Select Committee has said.--Strong electromagnetic pulses, such as the type produced by the detonation of nuclear weapons, could render technological infrastructure, such as the national grid, telecommunications and GPS, useless.--Electromagnetic pulses from space weather events are also likely to result in civil emergencies which would see the armed forces called out, but MPs found that no one government department had been designated... - Thu, 23 Feb 2012 06:08:14 +0000:

-22 February 2012- -- The Labour party has launched the consultation process for its Shadow Defence Review, it has been announced.--The consultation was launched by Shadow Defence Secretary Jim Murphy, and will be used to shape the party's long-term plans for UK defence policy.--The three-part consultation will examine the current security landscape, define the principles of Labour's policy on UK defence posture and then decide on force structures needed to fulfil those principles.--Shadow Defence Secretary Jim Murphy said Britain needed a defence policy which can "keep up" with world events following the Arab Spring.--"It must be flexible and agile, with new and wide-ranging capabilities," said Murphy. [RN Discussion Board] Dead-reckoning tables -
An esoteric question - ----I have been reading -Network-Centric Warfare- by Friedman. The historical development of procedures and systems fascinates me, but the book skims lightly over the past until about 1950. He does specify, however, that by 1937 some 232 automatic dead-reckoning tables had been installed in HM ships. What I wish to know is, in what physical location on any specific ships were these devices installed? It is implied that the captain had a great deal of latitude in finding space to place them, because in the absence of experience nobody was sure where they would be the most useful. - - Tue, 14 Feb 2012 00:00:00 +0000:

[RN Discussion Board] Manning a warship. -
-This is a general question, but I'm posting it here as this (sub) board has better traffic.---Despite being an enthusiast, I was limiting myself on pure specs. Except for a small patrol craft which spends most of her time at port, I have never learned about how combatant warships -- frigates, destroyers are being manned. Purely listed on references as compliments, I'm wondering how watches and systems are being manned. Apart from knowing that SSN/SSBNs are having two crews-- how do the officer and men work on board? Is it a continuous 6-hours watch? then followed by another 6-hours rest.. and so on... How about the weapons crew, and during general quarters condition? Are each ratings allocated a specific bunk, or do they share it with another mate? I understand that the ship's commander is 24-hours job, but similarly with a commercial ship -- they would have to rest and have the first officer do... - Fri, 10 Feb 2012 23:06:40 +0000:

(Source: House of Commons Defence Committee; issued Feb. 8, 2012)--The Government will need to make some difficult decisions on prioritisation if it embarks on a future mission similar to the Libya operation now that the Strategic Defence and Security (SDSR) is taking effect, says the Defence Committee in its report into Operations in Libya, published today. - - Although the UK was able to satisfy both operations in Libya and Afghanistan and its other standing tasks and commitments, the Libya operation was conducted before the implementation of many of the SDSR decisions on capability reductions. - - Chair of the Committee, Rt Hon James Arbuthnot MP says: - - "We consider that the Libya operation raises important questions as to the extent of the United Kingdom's national contingent capability. [RN Discussion Board] Keeping an old warship in service. -
-Its a question I have been asking to myself for a while. --I am not suggesting the RN do this but when you look at the T21s and T22BIs still in service you have to wonder how long a warship can last. I know Bangladesh may still run ancient Cat and Cathedral class frigates and there are one or two Leanders still knocking around.--So, how easy is it to keep a warship in service?--If you want to keep it reasonably up to date there are plenty of off the shelf systems that can be bought, Sea Ram, Sea Giraffe, modern guns etc.--How hard would it be to re-engineer an elderly gas turbine ship? They are after all equipped with semi-modular propulstion. So, for example at T21 - get rid of the expensive to run Olympus and replace with G30 gas turbines - either 4 as a Tyne replacesment or 2 with two modern diesels. And what about replacing generators with the latest spec kit?--This sort of thing happens on commercial vessels. --I... - Mon, 06 Feb 2012 19:03:05 +0000:
