This article seems like just another wish list, albeit a modest one. Brexit will have little or no impact on UK defence spending in the short or medium term and what is listed in this article would require a step change in government policy and a large increase in spending. I just cannot see the government increasing naval funding in a meaningful way right now, in government eyes there are more pressing issues.
The one upside is that Philip Hammond (former defence secretary) has been made Chancellor of the Exchequer.

They might want to consider PAYING them….

We can all point out what we SHOULD do, that’s an idealistic luxury that the MoD and the RN simply don’t have and by not recognising it the author simply wastes the time people take to read the article.
If money was freely available and there was no manpower cap many of our issues wouldn’t exist. In many ways articles like these aren’t helpful they’re demeaning and desultory, ignoring the work and efforts of innumerable Naval personnel across the ranks/rates who are trying their best to make the Navy work. Failing to recognise and address the artificial constraints within which the Navy has to operate is an irritant at best.
“increasing the flow of money” just fails to recognise the problem, that money, commercial freedoms and well considered (a-political) designs are a rarity.
The focus on work for Westland and BAE is misguided; we don’t need nor want to continually have to support UK industries, it’s a luxury we cannot afford. If they’re not competitive they’re not an option!
In sum, I really don’t believe there are any quick fixes. Plenty of bright, passionate and enthusiastic people are looking at that, but equally have to look to develop a sustainable future.
As for pay……as a serving member I still regard my pay as competitive even against my civilian peers, the opportunities outshine theirs and there are still perks, if you make the most of it!

It’s exactly this kind of thinking that has allowed other countries to overtake ours in the last 60 years. This country needs joined up thinking between all the different government ministries. Every dept needs to take into consideration the benefits to the economy of procuring British whenever possible. If they don’t then the maufacturing industry will disappear and the economy will tank as a result. When the economy tanks, the tax intake tanks, meaning there’s less money available for everyone, INCLUDING defence. How will the government be able to maintain the MOD budget when they have to pay for millions of more people on welfare payments due to the destruction of the manufacturing industry? We need to look at a wider picture of these things, and more long term. We can’t go on with the MOD and the others only looking out for themselves, othwerwise everyone will suffer in the long term.

You speak for yourself, I want my money to go to UK Industries, oh and they suffer from exactly the same problems you complain about. You should be supporting each other, otherwise what exactly did you sign up for, to protect a deskilled nation with no capacity to make the tools of it’s own defence. There are also plenty of ‘bright, passionate and enthusiastic people’ working in the UK defence industry. I believe in your ability to do your job and I also believe in the ability of British Industry to deliver the tools for that job. Now above all everybody in this country needs a bit of self belief.

Absolutaley correct!

Easy wins. Build the blooming 3 support ships here, and start it with belief from government and elsewhere in the UK instead of exporting more UK wealth at our expense to foreign Countries to save a few pounds!!!!!! Because of eu rules instead of a structure UK industry/MOD alliance as it should be!

Chris Jones

To be fair to the government, if you’re speaking about the new tide class rfa ships, no British yard tendered a bid to build the ships on the first place would have been better if they had but that is why they’re not being built here

Paul Padley

Easy wins for the exchequer, retain the existing Rivers and lay up 5 Type 23s as the ‘global’ batch 2 Rivers are built. Consider them as Black Swan protoypes with containerised Camm and a container of Wildcat spares.
